founder of Good Bird. Good Bird is something I've been thinking about for a while. I love birds and birding, I love Latin America, I love working with people, I love learning about different cultures, and I love coffee. So why not combine all those things and do something that will bring me personal satisfaction and do good?
Over the past 30 years, I've spent a lot of time in Latin America–studying, working, birding, and meeting interesting people. As a Peace Corps Volunteer in Guatemala in the mid 90's, I worked with farming families in agroforestry and sustainable agriculture. (I've lamented the fact that I wasn't a birder then: Two years of living in Central America were wasted by not birding!) Since then, I've had many wonderful opportunities to meet people working in community development and conservation and many coffee and cacao cooperatives that are truly making a difference by helping small-holder farmers produce and market their crops. I've also connected with local conservation non-profits and met local bird guides. I have seen how locally-based birding tourism can bring about positive change in a community and a region. That's one reason I started Good Bird–to support great guides, great places, and great people. I truly believe that birding tourism can make the the world a better place.
With my connections, knowledge, and experience, I have crafted some great birding trips that will not only bring you close to beautiful birds, but will also bring you close to coffee or cacao production, allow you to meet real people who produce and process these crops, and have an authentic experience in nature and in another culture. Some trips will be heavier on coffee and some will be heavier on birds, but they will all be heavy on experiencing the local culture and making positive change. I'm so excited to share my experiences and knowledge with you. What are you waiting for? Come join me!
